Uncle Sam’s Cake – Simple
Makes: 2 hats, each 3" wide x 2¼" tall
Ingredients:
- 1 package (10.75 ounces) frozen Sara Lee® Frozen Pound Cake, thawed
- Confectioners’ sugar
- Blue, white, and red rolled fondant
- 1 tub frosting
- Candy stars
Directions:
- Carefully remove pound cake from packaging and set on cutting board. Slice off rounded top portion of cake to level. (This portion will not be used for the hats.) Cut the pound cake horizontally into two ¾" thick slices.
- Using the 2 ⅞" cookie or biscuit cutter, cut two cake rounds from one pound cake slice. Repeat this process, cutting four 2 ⅛" cake rounds from the second pound cake slice.
- To make the base: sprinkle work surface with confectioners’ sugar. Knead 5 ounces of blue rolled fondant and roll out to about ⅛" thick. Cut two 5" circles. Lightly frost the 2 ⅞" cake rounds and place the blue fondant circle on top. Form fondant over the top and sides of each section. Cut away excess fondant at base of cake with a knife.
- To make the tops: Secure two of the 2 ⅛" pound cake rounds together with frosting to make a tall hat top. Then secure the tops to the blue bases with frosting.
- Knead 1 ounce of blue rolled fondant and roll out to about ⅛" thick. Cut a ¼" strip of blue fondant and affix it to the base of the top hat. Knead 2 ounces of white rolled fondant and roll out to about ⅛" thick. Cut 1 circle of white rolled fondant for the top of hat using the 2 ⅛" cookie or biscuit cutter. Knead 1 ounce of red rolled fondant and roll out to about ⅛" thick. Slice red fondant into strips and affix to the white circle with a dab of water. Secure white fondant circle to top of hat with frosting. Decorate with candy stars.
Cook’s Tip: Rolled fondant can be purchased in craft stores.
